Topic: Understanding the effects of mental health disorders in the juvenile justice system.
Alarmed by the high rates of juveniles that suffer mental health disorders in the in the system (Burfeind, J. W., & Bartusch, D. J., 2006).
Aware that 75-80% of children and adolescents are in need of mental health services and they do not receive treatment (Kataoka, Zhang, & Wells, 2002).
Bearing in mind that juveniles with unaddressed mental disorders are leaving facilities without treatment (State's youth prison system violates inmates' rights. Chicago Tribute News).
Taking to account that there are organizations working to improve the juvenile justice due the high rates of mental health disorders. (http://www.ncmhjj.com or http://www.macfound.org/about/)
Stressing that the juvenile justice system fails to provide adequate treatment for juveniles with mental health disorders, ( Schmadeke, S. 2013)
1. Confirms that juveniles that suffer from mental health disorders return to the stigma of their behavior due to their illness.
2. Expresses Hope that every juveniles battling their disorders can be properly treated.
3. Acknowledges the idea meeting Cross-Action Network meeting on May 20-21, 2014 at Loews Madison Hotel in Washington D.C to improve youth with mental health needs in the juvenile justice system.
4. Recommends advocating for this issue and help create programs for juveniles with mental health disorders.
5. Urges that community to become more involved with juveniles treatment because majority of juveniles that enter the system come from low-income communities.
